Welcome to the Home Page of the Interscholastic Sailing Association's South
Atlantic District (SAISA). Information on upcoming high school sailing events
and current issues are posted regularly. The South Atlantic District encompasses
Florida (except the panhandle), Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee,
Northern Alabama and outside the continental boundaries, islands in the Caribbean.
Note this and other districts in ISSA
are very similar to the collegiate
districts in both sailing format and geographic area.
SAISA is one of 7 districts in ISSA (refer to "What
is ISSA") and sponsors 12 or more regional regattas and three district
championship* events (Cressy, Mallory, Baker Regattas) plus a special championship
for schools new to sailing, Great
Oaks regatta. The top SAISA high school teams can qualify to sail in ISSA
National Regattas &/or the ISSA Great Oaks Invitational Regatta for new
schools. National Championships are held in one single handed class (Cressy
Trophy), and two double handed class, the fleet racing Mallory Trophy, and the
team racing Baker Trophy.
The format for sailing includes single handed Lasers and Laser Radials and
double handed 420s, and CFJs (plus some JY15s). Eligibility is open to both
boys and girls in grades 9 through 12 for National Championships, and grades
8 through 12 for the Great Oaks Regattas & various district events.
Chronologically, during the school year, we meet in four distinct events to
determine the SAISA District Champion, e.g., singlehanded (Cressy), doublehanded
single division fleet racing for new schools (Great Oaks), followed by doublehanded
(A & B division) fleet racing (Mallory), and then doublehanded team racing
(Baker). Championship events also serve as qualifiers for school teams to continue
on to participate in U.S. National High School Sailing Championships sponsored
by ISSA.
Geographically, SAISA has migrated from the past North-South configuration by adding a regional focus emphasizing development and realignment into four northern district areas: Upper Coastal, Lower Coastal, Inland East and Inland West areas. In a more efficient manner, SAISA will accommodate teams new to high school sailing, and in turn offer the "teams" upward mobility via opening new participation channels & allowing the team to qualify at "home" before participation in intermediate level competition & subsequently moving into more complex regattas without the necessity to endure the lengthy travel.
To stimulate new school teams and membership growth, sailing centers/contacts have been established in the Inland East area of the Carolinas such as Charlotte (NC), Upper Coastal Area such as Charleston (SC), Inland West Area covering North Alabama/Tennessee & mid Georgia with contacts located in Knoxville (TN) and the Lower Coastal Area encompassing Coastal Georgia/North Florida with contacts in Brunswick (GA) in addition to contacts for the Caribbean via St. Thomas (USVI). All are listed at the bottom of the page.
In the past, SAISA schools that have been successful placing in podium positions
within ISSA National Championships & Invitational Regattas*:
* Also refer to ISSA Trophy History.
Note that the Interscholastic sailing Association (ISSA), founded in 1930,
and the South Atlantic District (SAISA) of ISSA is dedicated to the nationwide
promotion of sailing as a sport among secondary school sailors, to the formation
of school teams, and to the organization of school sailing competition. ISSA
is the national governing body for high school sailing. To get an idea of
the regattas in the last 2005-06 school sailing season events, check below!
