REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

The Sarasota Youth Sailing Program was thrilled to have their first ever high school event be the first South Points Regatta of the 2007-08 season. The regatta took place on September 22 and a total of 17 teams (15 Varsity, two JV) arrived to compete on the waters of Sarasota Bay. Races were held to the South East of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and rotations were completed off the beach. The wind was forecast to be North-North East at 9 knots, however the morning lead to a more pleasant breeze coming from the East- South East at around 12 knots. The predominant course for the day was a modified triangle and two sets were completed in both A and B Division before the breeze began to dissipate. The race committee held one more race in each division before deciding that forcing competitors to do any more drifting would constitute cruel and unusual punishment.

Sarasota High School began their 2007-08 season with a bang, starting off both their A and B division sets with straight bullets. Thanks to some strong sailing by St. Thomas Aquinas in the following set, Sarasota High School trailed St. Thomas Aquinas by 1 point heading into the last race, but was unable to hold off a strong Sarasota HS B-Division that only had one finish below first place all day.

Many thanks go out to Ann Stocke for helping to provide lunch for all the sailors as well as serving as race committee, the Dowd’s for serving as mark boat, SYSP Head Instructor Charlie Underwood and Linda Featherstone for Race Committee and to Greg Knigton and Allan Cappelin for making the new sets of sails a reality. Additionally we are very grateful to all the high school sailors who used Sarasota as the starting point for their high school sailing careers.
