The Virginia Interscholastic
Sailing Association held the 2011 Interscholastic Sailing Association Baker
National Team Race Championship on May 20, 2011 and May 21, 2011 at the
Norfolk Yacht and Country Club in Norfolk, Virginia. On Saturday under sunny skies with
winds of 8 – 12 knots in the morning, 12 teams competed in the qualifying
round until the wind dropped off at 1:00 and racing was suspended. At 2:30
winds picked backup to 5 to 8 knots and racing continued until 6:30
completing 42 races for the day. Races averaged 18 minutes in duration On Sunday skies were again sunny.
Winds initially 6 to 8 knots died after the first race with the second race
being abandoned. Winds filled in at 5 to 7 knots around 2:00 and racing
continued. 66 races were completed at 3:30 with races of 10 - 14 minutes in
duration. Tabor Academy is the 2011 National
Team Race Champion, with a 10-1 record. Newport Harbor finished 2nd with a
9-2 record, winning a tiebreaker race over The Hotchkiss School (also 9-2)
and moving it to 3rd place. 1st Tabor Academy Team 10 Wins – 1

Saturday May 20, 2011 – Winds 8 to
12 knots from the WNW, 42 races sailed. Sunday May 1, 2011 – Calm in the
morning with winds picking up to 5 to 7 knots from the NNE, around 2pm, 25
Races sailed. PRO – Gary Bodie
did a great job keeping the course square and keeping the races rolling;
Chief Umpire – Rob Overton, with deputy Christine Accetella,
and their crack tram of umpires kept the races fair; Scorer – Tim Spracher maintained accurate scoring and posted scores
throughout the day; Regatta Chair – Randy Stokes assembled a great team of
volunteers and race officials who worked hard at the goal of making the event
a fair test of skill and a good experience for the teams Each of the teams, from top to
bottom, displayed great team racing skills. |
